Brown, Raymond E. et al., eds. The New Jerome Biblical Commentary. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1990. Commentaries on every book of the Bible plus various topical articles from a Catholic perspective (e.g. on inspiration) complete with bibliographies. Not the best tool to facilitate direct application of Scripture to one's life, but nevertheless helpful for study of the historical background and the literal sense of Scripture.
